Commentary: In the Beginning

August 24th, 2008 CoyoteJ

Coyote is a
sometimes playful,
sometimes foolish,
sometimes wise,
archetypal figure
who often
gets into trouble.

Short Coyote thoughts from day one:

It is sometimes hard to tell if there are more protesters or more media. What does this mean? It can’t be good.

Speaking of not good, the only real altercations were with Fox News (Coyote is always suspicious of foxes). Who knows who started it, but people almost started punching a Fox News reporter at the Capitol, and during the anti-war march. When the media becomes the story, too many media.

I think the police did a good job. Coyote could tell they were going out of their way to give space, not react, be present, and yet not be too present. I hope this continues.

Only Colorado people have heard of Recreate 68, or Tent State. Anyone not from Colorado has no idea what you are talking about.

Most shocking was the disappearance of Tent State. Coyote was told, as were we all, that twenty thousand or more Tent Staters would gather first in City Park, then it was Cuernavaca Park, and that at curfew they would march to the Pepsi Center protester area. Very, very wrong. At most thirty people went to the Pepsi Center. Coyote wants to know, is there a Tent State, and if so, what exactly is it?

Most touching were dozens of pairs of boots at Cuernavaca Park, each with the name of a Colorado soldier who had died in the war. Those boots brought tears to Coyote’s eyes.

What does it all mean? The union of opposites. All life is a union of opposites, and more pairs of opposites will manifest themselves this week. We can’t know the light without the dark.

City Park Encampment | Breaking News

August 9th, 2008 Joel Edelstein

On August 6, about 20 members of Denver’s City Park neighborhood met at the fourth and last of four community forums put on by the DNCC host committee to look at the impact of the DNC on local residents. City officials presented a brief power point - Chantal Unfug - the deputy assistant mayor, Perry Burnett, DNC Greening Chair, Elbra Wedgeworth, chairwoman of the dncc host committee, 8th District City Councilwoman Carla Madison and Denver police officer Steven Carter spoke and took questions. Residents did not express concern about a possible encampment of many thousands of young people in City Park proposed by the Tent State University group. The City of Denver has rejected the proposal. At an August 6 press conference, Tent State’s Adam Jung announced that when the 11pm curfew in the park arrives, those gathered there will pack their gear and march to the official free speech, zone, which they refer to as the “Freedomville Shantytown,” 2.5 miles away in downtown Denver. On August 8, the Denver Post reported that Tent State University organizers and city officials had agreed on a compromise that will allow Tent State members to spend nights in a parking lot at the Denver Coliseum and use the City of Cuernavaca Park until its 11 p.m. closing. But in an August 9 email, Tent State leader Adam Jung stated: “We ARE NOT camping at the Coliseum. The City of Denver, especially the Parks Department was trying to make themselves look good with flat out lies. We will still be staying at the ‘Freedomville Shantytown’ inside the freedom cages.”

Julia Anderson covered the community forum for KGNU and the Colorado Film School. She spoke with KGNU’s Joel Edelstein.

Commentary: DNC Traffic Closures Promise Chaos

July 16th, 2008 CBentley

DNCC logo, Pepsi Center

If patience is a virtue and virtue is a grace, delegates and media at August’s DNC in the Pepsi Centre are going to need both. In spades.

Finally, the Great and the Good (well, they’re neither but their positions in authority mean we have to be a little bit deferential, or else?) have revealed the road closures imposed from on high for Denver for the week beginning August 25th.

Most of Speer Boulevard and Auraria Parkway will be off limits for a large part of the week. But, neither Mr. Ford, Mr. Gates nor Mr. Dyson have yet invented either teleporting or the flying car so both patience, time, loads of very expensive gas, and cantankerous determination are going to be needed on a daily basis to get anywhere near to the Convention proceedings.
